The eyebrow gradually lowers from its original position. The loss of fat in the frontotemporal depression or temples in addition to the atrophy of the masseter muscle causes further prominent changes in the lateral edge of the eyebrow as we age (Patil et al. Aesthet Plast Surg 35:1031–5, 2011). Over time, these changes contribute to the position of the eyebrows falling, and are the reason why the angle formed by both eyebrows tends to be somewhat opened upward in youth and downward in elderly people, thus giving the typical “sad” appearance (Sclafani and Jung Arch Facial Plast Surg 12:123–7, 2010) (Fig. 58.1). |
