Popis: Th-- Zr--C systems, prepared by sintering under pressure, vacuum cooling, and arc fusion, were studied roentgenographically and metallographically. A phase distribution was carried out at 1100 and 1550 deg C. Alloys of the type Th--Zr-- ZrC-ThC were ignited for 40 hr at 1100 deg C and others of the type ThC-- ZrC--C were ignited at 1550 deg C for the same time period. The approximates 60 powdered alloys were examined with the Cu--K /sub alpha / band. Ternary alloys of the Zr--C system appeared to be present. The solubility of Th for C was about 6 at.% C, in agreement with values previously reported. The monocarbide had a range from 38--50 at.%. Thorium--zirconium samples ignited for 40 hr at 1100 deg C or prepared by arc fusion separated into two phases during cooling and could not be stabilized; ThC/sub 2/ and ThC form quasibinary eutectic mixtures with ZrC at both 1100 and 1550 deg C. No appreciable metal exchanges (less than 2 mole % ZrC for ThC and none for ThC/sub 2/) take place in the carbide phases. (BBB)
