Role of chest ultrasound in diagnosis of acute chest disorders in children

Popis: Background. Ultrasoud imaging of the chest is a promising tool in the evaluation of chest diseases. Objectives: To assess the role of chest ultrasound in diagnosis of acute chest disorders in children. Patients and Method: This was a prospective, observational study, conducted at the pediatric department of AL-Hussein and Sayed- Galal, University Hospitals. Children aged from (1month to 12 years of age), suffering from acute respiratory distress were included in this study. Full history taking, clinical examination, chest x-ray and chest ultrasound were performed on each patient. The main outcome was the correspondence between chest ultrasound findings and the patient final diagnosis. Results: A total of 100 patients were included, 66 males and 34 females. 30 patients were diagnosed as uncomplicated pneumonia, 17 patients had pneumonia complicated with effusion, 13 patients had non-pneumonic effusion, 12 patients with pneumothorax, 4 patients had lung collapse, 19 patients had acute bronchiolitis, 3 patients with lung abscess and 2 cases had mediastinal masses. Chest U/S was positive for the diagnosis in 85% of all cases. Table (1) Chest U/S correlation with the diagnosis in patients groups according to final diagnosis. Conclusion: chest ultrasound is a valid method for diagnosis of acute chest disorders in children.
