The voice is a unique marker of identity, and may easily betray a transgender individual’s desired gender and contribute to feelings of inadequacy and potential bias and ridicule from listeners. Transfeminine and transmasculine individuals have distinct needs in voice training to ensure that their voice safely conforms to their desired gender. Changing speaking fundamental frequency (SFF) is one of the goals in voice change for the transgender population. Transmasculine individuals typically achieve a lower SFF through surgery, while transfeminine individuals make changes through behavioral voice therapy. Changing SFF is but one way to change the gender presentation of the voice, and perceptions and satisfaction with the new voice are variable. There are also barriers to making change. Self-treatment can lead to vocal damage, and transgender individuals may be reluctant to visit a speech-language pathologist. They may lack knowledge of voice treatment, and it may be difficult to locate an unbiased, knowledgeable provider. |
