Popis: Cumulus clouds have been studied by radar and special flight observations with particular reference to the temperatures at which rain is initiated. In the Caribbean area rain starts while the clouds have temperatures greater than +5°C at their tops, except over heated islands. These results are in sharp contrast with data from New Mexico indicating no rain even when the tops of the cumulus are at temperatures less than −10°C. In the humid areas of the Middle West both above-freezing and below-freezing temperatures characterize the levels of rain formation.
