Popis: | The microstructural characteristics of titanium dioxide (TiO{sub 2}) aerogels were studied by electron microscopies augmented by other techniques such as nitrogen adsorption and X-ray diffraction. We show that the structure can be characterized by two length scales: 5 nm diameter crystalline nanoparticles of anatase closely packed into mesoaggregates of 50 nm. The mesoaggregates are, in turn, packed to a loosely linked structure with an overall porosity of 80%. The total surface area of the aerogels is attributed to the sum of the surfaces of the nanoparticles. 14 refs., 11 figs. |
