Popis: | In the history of psychology, some discontinuous forms of transformation have been overlooked due to conventional theory and research methods that generally focus on continuous, linear change. Following contributions from William James and humanistic emphasis on peak experiences and growth, contemporary psychologists have recently examined transformation following trauma in the form of posttraumatic growth. Given that the qualities of insightful, life-altering experiences are particularly important to contemporary psychology, this study examined experiences of discontinuous transformation using qualitative methods. Prior to transformation, the participants' understandings of self and world were disintegrating due to stress, relationship struggles, hopelessness, losing control/holding on, and psychological turmoil.
