Radionuclides from the Chernobyl NPP accident in 1986 and the Kyshtym nuclear waste accident in 1957 illustrated our lack of preparation for such disasters in Europe. The radionuclides were deposited on forests, agricultural lands, marshlands, rivers and lakes where the population utilized these regions for food, employment, and recreation. We question “How long will these areas remain contaminated and affect the population?” and “How can we document the health risks associated with continued exposure?” |
