Popis: This chapter examines the events that put Aymer de Valence in a state of partial eclipse from October 1313 to April 1316. It shows how the Earl of Pembroke became vulnerable to the major change in the balance of political power that would inevitably follow a royal reverse. This is what happened when Edward II's forces were defeated at Bannockburn in June 1314. Since then, Pembroke's importance diminished as the King's own freedom of action declined. As a result, much of Pembroke's authority had vanished by the end of 1314 as the King's chief opponents, Thomas, Earl of Lancaster and Guy de Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick, gained headway in English politics. The chapter considers Pembroke's role in the Bannockburn campaign and how it affected his political standing, Edward II's relations with the magnates, and the rise to prominence of Lancaster and Warwick in public affairs.
