Gross lesions in rats with cilia-associated respiratory (CAR) bacillus infection are not always present. Most commonly observed are purple, depressed patches of atelectasis, which usually contain yellow-tan, slightly elevated foci representing exudate-filled bronchi and bronchioles. In many cases these lesions affect entire lung lobes, with severe dilation of bronchi and bronchioles. Pulmonary abscesses up to several millimeters in diameter, especially in the periphery of the lung lobes, are a somewhat distinctive feature (Fig. 359). These lesions can occur in rats as young as 1 month of age (Lindsey et al. 1991). |
