Popis: | Summary Still lives by David Bailly. — The author, who is preparing a thesis on symbolism in still life painting, has already made hypothetical statements in this periodical (XIII. 1944, p. 1) on the lost still life production of David Bailly (1584–1657), painter of portraits and still lives in Leiden, teacher of the well‐known “vanitas” painters, Harmen and Pieter van Steenwyck. The author's search for a lost still life by Bailly, signed 1651, lead him, through important hints from Dutch art historians, to the picture, which is in a private collection at Bailleul (near Lille). The dense colour body, the plastic rendering and the accurated design of this picture seem also to be found in another still life painting, formerly attributed to Pieter Potter, and known to the author through photograph (Fig. 2). In addition, quite objective evidence justifies the attribution of the latter to David Bailly.
