A study of white space on traditional Chinese text-reading on smartphones

Popis: The study explored the effects of white space on readability of Chinese essays on smartphones. The experiment was a 2(line spacing) ×2(paragraph spacing) ×3(page spacing) Latin square design with two replicates. The line spacing size had two levels: one font height, and double font height. The paragraph spacing size included two levels: one line-spacing height, and double line-spacing height. The page spacing included three levels: none spacing, one-third spacing, and a half spacing. Objective performance measure was reading time; and subjective performance measures included subjective ratings of comfort, appealing, preference and effortless. Results of analysis of variance indicated that the main effects of Page Spacing, Line Spacing and Paragraph Spacing were significant on reading time. Besides, Page Spacing was also significant on subjective effort ratings; and both Page Spacing and Line Spacing were significant on subjective comfort ratings; both Page Spacing and Line Spacing were significant on subjective appealing ratings, and Page Spacing was significant on subjective preference ratings. The outcomes demonstrated that oversized white space would degrade readability.
