Popis: | An evaluation of all available manganese nodule and cobalt‐rich crust data in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Ellice Islands, Republic of Tuvalu, has been carried out. The results show manganese nodules in abundances of greater than 5 kg/m2 to be confined to the northern part of the area and nowhere to exceed 10 kg/m2. Compositionally, nickel and copper are low in the deposits, reaching highest values of only just over 1% locally in the N.W. of the area. Cobalt is also low. Seamounts have been sampled for Co‐rich crusts throughout the Tuvalu EEZ. Average crust thickness is 1.1 cm, and average Co content is 0.7%. Resource calculations indicate approximately similar amounts of Ni + Co + Cu in nodules as in crusts in the Tuvalu EEZ, which is a different situation to that found in the Cook, Line, and Phoenix Islands where total Ni + Co + Cu is greater in the nodules than in the crusts. |
