Popis: | Five species within the three genera Acetabularia Lamouroux, Chalmasia Solms-Laubach and Acicularia d'Archiac were examined by light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for distinctive taxonomic features. Statistical data on stalk lengths, cap diameters, ray numbers per cap and cyst numbers per ray have indicated that these characteristics are too variable for species recognition. However, scanning electron microscopy has revealed that the corona superior on the upper surface of the cap and the corona inferior on the lower side do exhibit species-specific morphologies. A reclassification of the living forms within the subfamily Acetabularieae is proposed based on the presence or absence of an inferior corona. This revision reduces the living species Acicularia schenckii to synonomy with Acetabularia, based on the presence of both an inferior and superior corona. The genus Polyphysa Lamouroux characterized by the lack of an inferior corona is raised from synonomy with Acetabularia and includes ... |
