A system design for evaporative cooling is presented that employs a continuous slotted inlet surrounded by an air inlet plenum that also supports the evaporative pad. Environmental performance data was collected over two summers in a renovated broiler house using the plenum pad concept in one-half of the house. The use of a continuous inlet provided the cool inlet air for all birds housed. An average evaporative efficiency of 80% was obtained while maintaining inlet jet velocities at 3.1 m/s (611 ft/min) and average air velocities near the floor of 0.9 m/s (177 ft/min). Pad evaporative efficiency was found to be reduced by as much as 23% due to pad and water tank exposure to direct solar radiation. |
