Popis: | Avoiding the rotating-wave approximation (RWA), we investigate analytically the dynamics of a two-level atom in an optical-frequency pulse of a few-cycle duration. We present the exact analytical solution for the first-order non-RWA contribution to the known RWA dynamics. Our solution is an improvement of the recent solution by Genkin [Phys. Rev. A 58 (1998) 758]. The two solutions are compared and the difference between them is found to be non-negligible for certain evolution moments. Generally, the solution of Genkin is shown to give underestimated results for the measurable population difference between a pair of atomic levels. |
