Chitosan (CS) is considered as the second-most abundant biopolymer found of this planet, after cellulose. It’s derived from the exoskeleton of crustaceans. CS possess excellent properties such as nontoxicity, biodegradability, biofunctional, and antibiotic. Owing to these properties, CS has gathered enormous attention in biomedical, textile, and packaging research areas. Biomaterials are conventionally known to be used in biological applications and are not supposed to interact with human body to avoid any adverse side effects when implanted. Recent advances showed promising applications where a biomaterial interacted with body and provided signals that can be used for diagnostic purposes. These types of biomaterials categorized as fourth-generation biomaterials. There has been a growing demand to modify the conventional definition of biomaterials. The objective of the present chapter is to bring together the recent advances on the development of advanced fourth-generation devices based on CS. |
