Popis: O’Melia provides a much necessary background of the evolution of Saturday Morning and the changes that occurred with American children’s media from 1986 until Saturday Morning’s conclusion in 2014. She does this by first detailing the slow emergence of Japanese content on Saturday Morning from almost none in the late 1980s until the debut of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in 1993. From this point on, the story of Saturday Morning is dominated by a rivalry between the FOX and WB networks and O’Melia uses this thread to explore how both networks used Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and programs similar to these phenomenal successes, to try to win over their young audience, gradually integrating and mainstreaming Japanese media in the process. The reactions of the other networks to this rivalry—ABC, CBS, and NBC—and how they created a polarized environment for children’s broadcasting are also explored and analyzed to create a complete picture of this transformation of Saturday Morning.
