Popis: | An experiment was conducted to assess survival and growth of hybrid Florida red tilapia (Tilapia hornorum × T. mossambica) reared from fry through advanced fingerling stages in floating marine cages. Eight 1-m3 cages were anchored in a sheltered sea pass off Great Exuma, Bahamas, and stocked with monosex male fry (average weight, 1.79 g) at densities of 500 or 1,000 fish/m3. Each treatment consisted of four replicate cages. After 30 d, survival averaged 88.8% and mean weights averaged 13.8 g; 71.3% of the fingerlings weighed between 8.7 and 19.1 g. There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) between treatments in survival, specific growth rate, daily weight gain, feed consumption and conversion, and fish condition. The results demonstrate the feasibility of producing advanced Florida red tilapia fingerlings of relatively uniform size in floating marine cages stocked at high density. |
