Summary Tight reservoirs are the most common unconventional sources of hydrocarbon; they are defined as reservoirs that cannot be produced at economic flow rate nor recover economic volumes unless stimulated or produced using horizontal or multilateral wellbore. This, being said, suggests a good understanding of petrophysical properties of the reservoir rock as well as the fluid it contains. The front-line characterization mean is the Wireline logging which comes directly after drilling the well or while drilling (LWD), knowing that for tight reservoirs any attempt of conventional well testing will not bring any added value not rather than a confirmation of reservoir tightness. Applying conventional evaluation workflows and techniques may not be suitable to characterize this type of unconventional plays due to the challenges related to the poor petrophysical properties of the reservoir rock, the high uncertainties on reservoir fluid type contacts, the limitations of some logging tools, and the critical role of natural fractures. This is why a novel multidisciplinary approach needs to be adopted, integrating answer products from different domains in order to enable the interpreter, (the reservoir engineer, the geologist, and the Petrophysicist) to better understand and characterize the reservoir, toward a good reserves evaluation and appropriate development plan. |
