Popis: | Toumcyella pinicola Ferris (Homoptera: Coccidae) is an important pest of certain ornamental pines in coastal California. Infested trees are reduced in vigor and become blackened by the sooty-mold fungi which colonize the honeydew produced by the scales. There is 1 generation each year. Emergence of crawlers begins in mid- or late spring in San Mateo County, California. When confined individually and held outdoors, females produced an average of 1307 crawlers over a period of 20 days. Female scales developed on the stems of shoot growth whereas about 80% of the males developed on the needles. Adult males emerged in mid-summer and early fall, at which time the females were approximately half grown. |
