Summary A new concept of vagal tuning (stimulation) in the treatment of supravascular tachycardias and arrhythmias has been introduced. The development of a transistorized unit “vagal tuner” has been discussed. Vagal tuning has been successfully used in the control of a variety of artificially induced sinus tachycardias and ectopic beats in dogs. Vagal tuning in conjunction with sympathomimetic drugs offers unique opportunites to utilize the latter drugs to advantage for their vasodilating and inotropic effects while suppressing their excessive chronotropic effects. The relationship of vagal tuning and coronary flow has been presented. Suggestions as to its use in the future in patients with symptoms of angina have been made. The authors wish to thank Drs. Naip Tuna, Kurt Amplatz, Merle K. Loken, David Nordberg, and William Wilson for their assistance and advice in the measurement of coronary flow. |
