Popis: | Large energy splittings of several eV of the 4f-derived photoemission signals of Pr–Rh and Nd–Rh compounds are reported. The phenomena are described quantitatively in the framework of the single-impurity Anderson model. The splittings are explained by a hybridization-induced quenching of the energy degeneracy of the bare 4f n −1 configuration with the Rh 4d-derived valence band. Admixtures of several percent of divalent configurations to the trivalent ground-states are concluded. Consideration of such admixtures may be important for the understanding of magnetic anomalies in late transition-metal compounds of these rare-earth elements. |
