The use of fertilizer for maintaining both an acceptable turfgrass growth rate and aesthetic quality is an important component of turfgrass management. This chapter reviews the current scientific literature concerning the effect of fertilizer addition and management practices on the potential for contamination of associated water supplies. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are generally the most widely applied fertilizers for turfgrass and golf course construction and maintenance. The specific fertilizer requirements needed both during golf course construction and maintenance have been reviewed by Beard. Potassium is prone to leaching through the soil, especially in sand root zones. Potassium fertilization is often determined by the results of a soil test. Nitrogen is one of the essential plant nutrients required in substantial amounts to maintain adequate turfgrass and plant growth. |
