A mathematical model is presented for the quantification of the effects of carbonate dissolution and volume reduction on the basis of mass balance-type comparisons between sediment volumes before and after effective carbonate redistribution due to pressure solution. Application of the model to a carbonate source rock formation from Italy allowed the quantification of the degree of organic matter enrichment in solution seams or stylolites and the extent of organic matter dilution in adjacent matrix layers. The diagenetic unmixing of carbonate versus non-carbonate materials has resulted in a heterogenous distribution of organic matter in this source rock formation. This effect needs to be considered in hydrocarbon exploration for assessment of source potential. |
