Coleoptera as an indicator of restoration of the biotic potential in Ukrainian steppe agroecosystems under a decreasing pesticide load

Popis:	Reaction of the adult herpetobiont beetles in the agroecosystems of the steppe zone in Ukraine to a decrease of the pesticide load was investigated. In 1999–2005, when pesticide load was reduced by 10–12 times as compared to 1983–1989, the species diversity and population densities of beetles increased considerably. These data suggest that the biotic potential in the agroecosystems can be restored whereas the natural populations of predatory beetles can effectively maintain the insect pests at an economically insignificant level. It is believed that a 10–12-fold decrease of the amounts of pesticides applied will allow unpolluted agricultural crops to be grown without considerable loss in any country.
