Popis: Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) has been used to study the room temperature chemisorption of oxygen on tin. EELS spectra are presented that show a continuous shift in surface plasmon energy loss from 10 to 6.5 eV during oxidation. The energy loss peak at 6.5 eV is attributed to the formation of SnO2 while the higher energy losses are associated with the formation of non-stoichiometric SnO2 containing Sn interstitials during the initial stages of oxidation.
