Popis: On a cruise into the northeast Atlantic background values of hydrocarbons in seawater have been determined. The water extracts were investigated by ultraviolet fluorescence spectroscopy (UV-F), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results were compared with those from sea areas with higher degrees of pollution (North Sea, Baltic Sea). The “total hydrocarbon concentrations” — determined by UV-F — are in the range of 0.1 to 0.3 μg/l (Ekofisk crude oil equivalents) and thereby, are 10 times lower than the values of the Baltic and North Sea. The investigations by HPLC demonstrate considerable differences in the composition of the fluorescing compounds of the Atlantic and the Baltic and North Sea, showing for the latter higher amounts of polar non-hydrocarbons. Selected single hydrocarbon constituents were determined by GC-MS. The concentrations vary — depending on the chemical structure — between 3 ng/l to below 5 pg/l.
