Elastic full waveform inversion is a common tool to obtain high resolved velocity models as well as density models from the subsurface. Surface waves have a strong influence on the inversion of onshore data. Due to the higher amplitudes and minor penetration depth of surface waves, in comparison with body waves, the inversion of data that include surface waves leads to stronger sensitivity near the surface and reduced sensitivity at greater depths. We will present an algorithm which mutes the surface waves in the time domain from the data as well as from the sensitivity kernels, which leads to a more regular pattern in the wavefields. The feasibility of this algorithm is demonstrated through the comparison of frequency domain wavefields and sensitivity kernels. |
