Geographic information systems can be divided into two types according to content, function, and role: the tool-type geographic information system and the applied geographic information system. The pipeline GIS system implemented in this book is an applied GIS. The main development methods of the applied geographic information system are introduced, then analyzed and compared. The compared conclusion is that the Component GIS-based method is suitable for the development of applied geographic information system. The author briefly summarizes the concept, roles, characteristics, and component models of Component GIS. The technical characteristics of Microsoft’s Component Object Model (COM) are emphatically introduced. The most widely used GIS component library is ArcObjects. The process and method of applying ArcObjects to network environment through ArcGIS Server are elaborated in detail. |
