Popis: This chapter provides a contextual overview of design for emotional experiences, often referenced as design and emotion in conference venues and elsewhere. Early history of the significance of emotion in design is evident in architectural theory dating back to 50 BC that recognized the need for “delight” to accompany utility and structural soundness [Vitruvius, P. (transl. by Morgan M.H.), 1960. De architetura: The Ten Books on Architecture. Courier Dover Publications, New York], with an interesting correspondence traced to the common terminology of useful, usable, and desirable popularized in the 1990s. More recent developments follow product semantics and experience design, through to the formal establishment of design and emotion as a recognized area of design expertise in research and practice, and ultimately a significant contributing factor to what is commonly accepted today as user experience (UX) design. Research and theories of design and emotion are considered for the ways in which the field is parsed by various themes for understanding and practice. Methods and approaches common to design and emotion are provided as useful tools for research and application.
