Popis: | Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) is a major cause of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity and recent data indicate that the incidence of retinopathy and nephropathy in NIDDM is similar to that in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Furthermore, the incidence of neuropathy is very high in NIDDM and this, along with vascular disease, is a major etiologic factor in amputations. Because of these factors as well as epidemiologic data indicating that impaired glucose tolerance is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, prevention of impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and prevention of deterioration to NIDDM are important goals for new approaches to NIDDM. |
