A variational procedure is developed for obtaining the geometry of a scattering medium between a source and a detector. This medium maximizes the radiative flux through the detector. It is shown that the variational formalism leads to an equation whose solution is the object's geometry. A simplified model is developed where scattering processes and external source are not taken into account. We study a thin layer of a radiative medium which is confined in a torus with a rectangular cross-section. A strong maximum of the radiative flux is obtained with solutions of the catenary problem. |
