It is well known that Hunt’s syndrome is caused by the reactivation of varicella zoster virus (VZV), and as viral isolation from vesicle fluid is very difficult due to the high lability of the virus, usually laboratory diagnosis is carried out by serological testing. For direct immunofluorescence, well-prepared cellular smears are necessary. Diagnosis by antibody detection is not possible in the early days of disease and is complicated by cross-reactions to herpes simplex virus. |
