Popis: Whereas up to 10% (median: 0.046-0.1%) of platelet concentrates are regarded to be bacterially contaminated, approximately only one out of 9 million transfused red blood cell (RBC) units bears the chance of death from sepsis due to contamination with psychrophilic bacteria, mainly Yersiniα enterocoliticα. We report the clinical course and the bacteriological examination of unavoidable fatal septic shock resulting from transfusion of a RBC unit contaminated with Y. enterocoliticα in a 47-year-old man who underwent cystectomy due to bladder cancer. The case is discussed in the light of different recommended measures during collecting and processing of blood donations that could be suitable to prevent bacterial contamination.
