Popis:	Information concerning the development of heat islands over South African cities is presented, the literature on vertical temperature structure above cities is briefly reviewed and the complexity of the structure obtaining over Johannesburg is illustrated. Objectives of the Johannesburg Urban Heat Island Project are outlined.
