Popis: | Routes to O‐carboxymethyltartronate derivatives (I) involving (a) electrochemical carboxylation of diglycolic acid N‐methylimide (II) and (b) chemical carboxylation (using a carbon dioxide equivalent) of esters of diglycolic acid (III) have been demonstrated. In route (a) tetraethyl ethenetetracarboxylate (IV) or 2,2'‐di‐t‐butylazobenzene (V) were used as probases and after reaction the reduced species were reconverted to the probase by anodic (VI) or air (VII) oxidation. The product from II was identified as a bis‐carboxylate (VIII) which on saponification or alkylation lost one molecule of carbon dioxide, givingIa or IX, respectively. |
