In 2015, a comparative study of different PV modules was started at the Outdoor Test Field at the DEWA R&D Center at the MBR Solar Park in Dubai. Thirty different module types (multi- and monocrystalline silicon) were tested, out of which two were picked for this study. Non-destructive techniques such as ultraviolet fluorescence imaging, visual inspection, and module external quantum efficiency analysis were used to detect the encapsulant degradation occurring on the modules, where UV-F visualizes the discoloration while module EQE quantifies and pinpoints the effect and causes. Results show that all modules show browning both under visual light and through UV-F, which was correlated to a loss in EQE in the shorter wavelengths corresponding to the UV range and rear side of the module. Affected regions within the cell show a reduced EQE over the entire spectrum, indicating a multi-layered effect on the cell’s packaging.
