Popis: We report the external electric field (amplitude and frequency) dependent photoluminescence (PL) of semiconducting quantum dot doped nematic liquid crystal (QD-NLC) nanocomposites in in-plane switching (IPS) cells at room temperature using high-resolution steady-state spectrofluorometry. The application of a low frequency (i.e. 1 kHz) electric field to IPS cells increased the PL intensity with applied field, due to the reorientation of NLC director. Surprisingly, for amplitudes above the threshold field the PL intensity also increased with increased frequency of applied electric field. The PL intensity saturated at high frequency for lower strength of applied electric field and vice-versa. The frequency range to tune the PL intensity was two-fold higher at fields close to threshold than a field well above threshold. The variation in fringing field with the frequency of applied field in IPS cells is a possible reason for the significant frequency tunable PL. The results showed that the electrically tunable PL of QD-NLC nanocomposites are potentially useful in liquid crystal based tunable photoluminescent devices.
