Zeolites of the offretite—erionite family were synthesized using various organic cationic templates in place of the tetramethylammonium cation normally used in offretite synthesis. These zeolites had 400–500 m 2 g −1 surface area, 0.25–0.30 cm 3 g −1 pore volume and morphologies that depended on the synthesis method used. X-ray and electron diffraction patterns were similar to those published for either ZSM-34 or TMA-offretite. Electron diffraction data showed that stacking faults and superstructures occurred in some of the preparations. Constraint indices ranged from 2 to 115. Crystals with a constraint index > 8.0 converted methanol to ethylene with yields in the 45–50% range. In alkylating toluene with ethylene, reaction rates were slow compared to HZSM-5 and there was no para -selectivity. This suggests that the reaction was confined mainly to the crystallite surface. |
