The question, Why don't children learn to compute better? is being asked frequently by school administra tors, teachers, and parents, which reflects the current concern over this aspect of the curriculum. While the evidence on children's performance today as compared to that of other children in previous times may be mixed, it is clear that performance could be improved and that consideration again needs to be given to improving the learning of number ideas and the acquisition of computational skills. |
