Geographically, Virginia is divided into four parts: (1) Tidewater Virginia, which includes the Eastern Shore (separated from the rest of the state by Chesapeake Bay) and the Coastal Plains region up to the 'fall line'; (2) the Piedmont area, extending from the 'fall line' west to the slopes of the Blue Ridge, spreading out like an inverted funnel, two counties wide in the north and seven counties wide in the south, and embracing the largest part of the state; (3) the Valley and Ridge province, sometimes called the Appalachian Valley, made up of a very irregular series of prominent linear ridges and valleys, including the Shenandoah Valley; and (4) the Appalachian Plateaus, at the very southwestern corner of the state.2 About a third of the counties in Virginia are wholly or partly west of the Blue Ridge; these counties differ physically, socially, and almost spiritually from the rest of the state.
