In the most recent monograph of the genus in North America, this species group was treated as four species (Vernonia fasciculata, V. corymbosa, V. marginata, andV. tenuifolia). Information from field studies, comparative morphology, biochemical systematics, transplant studies, hybridization experiments, and comparative distribution is presented and used to establish a new classification.Vernonia tenuifolia is considered to be a synonym ofV. marginata.Vernonia corymbosa is treated as a subspecies ofV. fasciculata. Keys, descriptions, synonymies, and distribution maps are provided. It is suggested that two taxa be referred to as hybrids,V. Xreverchonii Gleason (pro sp.) andV. Xvulturina Shinners (pro sp.). |
