Popis: The concept that mononuclear phagocytes participate in any capacity in the immunopathologic events that occur in the airways of patients with hyperreactive disease is new in the last 15 years. Traditionally, macrophages have been thought of as defenders of the respiratory tract, primarily because of their impressive phagocytic capabilities, and as cells ready to sacrifice their lives to sustain the viability of the host. A fundamental tenet of immunology is that macrophages are required to process and present antigen to lymphocytes for the optimal development of a coordinated immune response. Macrophages have the potential to affect smooth muscle function either directly or indirectly. Macrophages may modify eosinophil-directed movement or product release through elaboration of at least three mediators which affect the eosinophils directly. Substantial data now suggest that macrophages and their products are included in the mechanisms of airway inflammation associated with allergic forms of asthma.
