Popis: This paper discusses how status considerations affect one's choice of a college or university. The paper builds on the idea that students are concerned with local status as well as global status, and choose schools on the basis of both. Implications for school choice, retention, academic competition and students' attitudes about academic standards are developed in a diagrammatic exposition.
