The adoption of bifacial modules continues to grow driven by the increased power for these designs in the field and progress in bifacial silicon cell technologies. An important consideration for adoption of this technology is the long-term durability of these module designs. While initial designs of bifacial modules have used double glass module structures, the greater weight and limited field experience with these module designs has raised some reliability concerns. Recently transparent backsheets have been developed which allow bifacial PV module designs that have higher manufacturing throughput and yield and build on the established field performance of these designs. In this paper, we will compare the performance and durability of these two designs over a broad range of key attributes and assess the strengths and weaknesses of each design approach. We will review the requirements and performance of transparent backsheets and demonstrate durability over a broad range of accelerated stress conditions. We will also incorporate field examples that point to the expected durability issues of each design approach and accelerated test methods to determine long term durability.
