The release of additional wartime information in the mid-1970s resulted in a re-evaluation of some aspects of the Battle of the Atlantic, one outcome of which has been an increased emphasis on the part played by HF DF, installed both in convoy escorts and ashore. Although detailed technical papers on DF developments were published in the late 1940s, later writers have largely ignored these, with the result that some technical errors have arisen. The present monograph endeavours to correct this situation by summarising the most important aspects of the wartime development of HF DF for the Royal Navy. Developments for the United States Navy, and also Germany, are mentioned where necessary to give a proper understanding of the work. Short sections on the operational problem, and on relevant aspects of DF theory, are included for the benefit of readers not acquainted with them. |
