There is little debate in modern scientific circles that tobacco use poses major health risks. Diseases as different as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, atherosclerotic vascular disease, transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder, and others have been linked by strong epidemiologic data to tobacco use, especially cigarette smoking. 3 Yet tobacco remains one the largest threats to public health. It is encouraging that smoking rates are declining in the United States, but millions of people still smoke. It is an even greater problem overseas, particularly in developing countries. |
