Popis: Tumors and infections of the lumbar spine share a propensity to involve the vertebral body. When disease is limited, progressive vertebral destruction is controlled by chemotherapy, radiation, or hormonal therapy. In advanced cases, pain, deformity, and neurological deficit may develop as the vertebral column loses its functional capacity. The poor results following laminectomy for anterior pathology stimulated the development of anterior surgical approaches to facilitate adequate debridement of abscesses and diseased vertebrae. These procedures require careful preoperative planning and familiarity with anterior spinal anatomy and operative technique. Bone-graft reconstruction of the corpectomy defect is indicated in cases of infection or benign tumor or when long-term survival is anticipated. In patients with metastatic disease and limited life expectancy (
