Addiction to illegal drugs is associated with impaired health, harmful behaviors, and major economic and social burdens. It also is a chronic illness that responds to medical treatment. This treatment requires a combination of acute care, the management of relapses, and continuous follow-up care. An essential element in achieving treatment goals is parity in health insurance reimbursement equivalent with that for other chronic, relapsing diseases. This would facilitate the patient’s access to care, a range of treatment benefits, and the assessment of clinical outcomes. |
